Enrolling in Classes at KU as a

High School Student

High school students can take classes at the University of Kansas outside of the Jayhawk Blueprint program as non-degree seeking students. Please note that the Jayhawk Blueprint discounted tuition rate only applies to courses offered within the program through participating school districts. All other KU courses are billed at the standard undergraduate tuition rate. Before enrolling, check with your high school counselor to confirm whether your KU course(s) can also count toward high school credit.

As a non-degree seeking student, you are expected to follow the same registration, enrollment, payment, attendance, and academic policies as degree-seeking KU students. You must also meet any course-specific requirements and prerequisites. For courses offered by one of KU's professional schools, contact the school or department directly for details on specific enrollment requirements.

Follow the steps below to apply to KU as a non-degree seeking student and enroll in classes. If you have questions or need help at any point, the Office of Admissions or the Registrar's Office are available to assist you.

1. Complete the Non-Degree Seeking Student Application

To enroll in a KU course as a high school student, start by submitting a non-degree seeking student application through the Office of Admissions. A non-refundable $40 application fee is required. Students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds or those with military affiliation may be eligible for a fee waiver.

You must submit a new application each academic year unless you maintain active status as a non-degree seeking student.

If you later choose to apply to KU as a degree-seeking student, you will need to complete a separate admissions application. Being admitted as a non-degree seeking student does not guarantee admission as a degree-seeking student.

2. Set Up Your KU Online ID and Email Account

Once you are admitted to KU as a non-degree seeking student, the Office Admissions will send your 7-digit KU ID number by mail. You can also access your KUID online at: admissions.ku.edu/status/.

Use your KUID to set up your KU Online ID, which serves as your username and password for accessing KU systems. When you create your KU Online ID, a default email address is automatically generated, but you can customize it using MyIdentity Services (link below). Important information, such as tuition bills and payment deadlines, will be sent to your KU email account, so be sure to check it regularly.

3. Review the Class Schedule to View Available Classes

Review the class schedule to find available courses and check for any prerequisites.

If you plan to take a course at KU that requires a prerequisite, submit the test score or an official academic transcript (showing the prerequisite was completed) to the Office of Admissions and email transfercredit@ku.edu which courses need to be posted to your KU student record.

Some courses may require instructor or departmental permission. Look for classes marked "Instructor Consent Required" or "Departmental Consent Required," and contact the department or instructor if permission is needed.

4. Enroll in KU Classes During Your Assigned Enrollment Period

Non-degree students can begin enrolling:

Specific dates are listed on the KU Academic Calendar.

Use Enroll & Pay to register for your course(s) during your assigned enrollment period. See the step-by-step enrollment guide below for detailed instructions.

To drop a class, select the "Drop Classes" tab in Enroll & Pay. Be sure to check the KU Academic Calendar for important drop and refund deadlines.

5. Review and Pay Your Tuition Bill by the Due Date

After you enroll in a KU course, your eBill will post to your Enroll & Pay account by the 21st day of the month following enrollment. Payment is due on the 15th of the following month.

You will receive a notification at your KU email address each time a new eBill is posted to your account. You can update your email address in Enroll & Pay by selecting the "Personal Details" tile and then "Contact Details".

Jayhawk Blueprint Students: The Jayhawk Blueprint discounted rate applies only to courses within the program. Courses taken outside the Jayhawk Blueprint program are billed at the standard KU undergraduate tuition rate (tuition calculator linked below).

Financial aid and scholarships are generally not available for non-degree seeking seeking students. However, you may be able to use funds from a 529 plan to pay tuition, if applicable.

6. Additional Reminders and Information

Submit your required immunization records to Watkins Health Services in a timely manner to avoid an enrollment hold on your account. You can upload your records through the secure patient portal. Once Watkins Health Services verifies your records, your hold will be automatically removed.

As a non-degree seeking student, you are also eligible to order a KU ID Card, which is the official University of Kansas identification card for students, faculty, staff, and other members of the KU community. It provides access to campus resources, including buildings, libraries, and computer labs.

You also have access to a variety of academic and support resources as a non-degree seeking student. Use the link below to explore these services and learn how to take advantage of them.
