The Jayhawk Blueprint program sincerely values its strong partnerships with concurrent enrollment instructors and University of Kansas faculty liaisons. We work closely with instructors and faculty liaisons to ensure that the academic rigor and curriculum standards of concurrent enrollment courses in the high schools match those of their KU counterparts.

Who Teaches Jayhawk Blueprint Courses

Jayhawk Blueprint courses are taught by qualified high school and university instructors who must meet specific criteria set by the Higher Learning Commission and The University of Kansas. These instructors are approved by the school district, relevant academic department at KU, and the Jayhawk Blueprint program.

Who Supports and Oversees Jayhawk Blueprint Instructors

Faculty liaisons provide training and orientation to new Jayhawk Blueprint instructors to help them become familiar with the course. During the onboarding process, instructors receive essential resources such as the current course syllabus, assessment rubrics, course textbook, sample exams, and other necessary materials to ensure a consistent classroom experience. Faculty liaisons also review assignment and grading standards, course integrity, pedagogical approaches, relevant policies and procedures, and other topics specific to the course content. Additionally, faculty liaisons also provide timely curriculum and departmental updates, as well as ongoing training and professional development as needed to all Jayhawk Blueprint instructors.

Who Proposes New Jayhawk Blueprint Courses

Typically, the school district leads this process. They must have qualified instructors within the high school, room in their schedule to teach the course, and sufficient student demand or interest. The Jayhawk Blueprint team works closely with the district throughout the new course proposal process, facilitating connections with KU departments as needed.

Information for Jayhawk Blueprint Instructors

Jayhawk Blueprint Program instructors are teachers employed by the school district who meet qualifications to teach concurrent enrollment courses outlined by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and The University of Kansas. Jayhawk Blueprint instructors are supported by faculty liaisons from KU's College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.

To meet the required HLC instructor qualifications, Jayhawk Blueprint instructors must either:

  • Have a master's degree in the subject area of the course(s) they teach or
  • Have a master's degree plus at least 18 graduate credits in the subject area of the course(s) they teach

Jayhawk Blueprint instructors have until September 2025 to achieve the above criteria. If a Jayhawk Blueprint instructor does not currently meet the qualifications, they will need to work with the Jayhawk Blueprint coordinator to complete and regularly update a compliance plan to work toward meeting the HLC qualifications established deadline. Contact Melissa Johnson, Program Coordinator, with any concerns or questions.

Jayhawk Blueprint Instructor

A Jayhawk Blueprint instructor is a high school teacher approved by the University and employed by the school district. They teach Jayhawk Blueprint classes at the high school and must meet specific qualifications established by the Higher Learning Commission and The University of Kansas.

The Jayhawk Blueprint instructor will:

  • Submit a Jayhawk Blueprint Instructor Agreement Form, Jayhawk Blueprint Instructor Information Sheet, a resume, and transcript to the Jayhawk Blueprint program coordinator and ensure the information is updated as needed.
  • Provide all Jayhawk Blueprint students with a University course syllabus at the beginning of each course. Ensure that course objectives or competencies match those required for the course as indicated on the University course outline and reflected on the University course syllabus. Additional objectives, competencies, or other material may be included in the curriculum and may be appended to the syllabus.
  • Administer final exams in those courses in which such exams are required for on-campus courses. Adhere to University departmental procedures on administration and security of exams.
  • Attend University program meetings with departments or in-service as needed to ensure continuity of instruction.
  • Partner with the University faculty liaison for course development, onboarding, and training.
  • Facilitate University faculty liaison classroom visits and annual instructor evaluations.
  • Respond to University faculty liaison emails, phone calls, or other communication in a timely manner.
  • Return final grade rosters to the University faculty liaison by the date specified for each course.
  • Use the adopted University textbooks for all Jayhawk Blueprint courses. Exceptions must be approved by the University department, program, and the Jayhawk Blueprint program coordinator.
  • Uphold standards, requirements, and rigor necessary for University credit to be earned by students.
  • Conduct student learning and instructor evaluations as required by the University.
  • Cooperate with the University in responding to other routine requests.

Enrollment Process

1. Students will enroll in Jayhawk Blueprint course(s) at their high school

To enroll in Jayhawk Blueprint course(s), students must meet with their high school counselor during the typical enrollment periods set by the high school. Students must be an incoming sophomore, junior, senior, or freshmen with a gifted IEP to enroll in Jayhawk Blueprint courses. .

2. Students must complete the required enrollment form or application

After students enroll in Jayhawk Blueprint course(s) at their high school, they must complete either the non-degree seeking student application through the KU Admissions Office OR the Jayhawk Blueprint sign-up form by the enrollment deadline.

  • If a student completed a Jayhawk Blueprint course last semester (i.e., spring 2024), they will need to complete a brief online sign-up form.
  • If a student did not take a Jayhawk Blueprint course last semester or have never taken a Jayhawk Blueprint course, they will need to complete the FREE non-degree seeking student application (NDS application).

Students only need to complete one form but must complete an enrollment form or application each semester they take a Jayhawk Blueprint course. If you or your student is unsure about which document to complete, please contact our office at blueprint@ku.edu.

3. The Jayhawk Blueprint team will enroll students in their courses at KU

This step requires no action on the student’s part. If they are enrolled at their high school and have completed the required non-degree seeking student application or sign-up form by the deadline, the Jayhawk Blueprint team will enroll them in their course(s) at KU as long as they do not have an outstanding balance. Students must have a zero tuition and fees balance for enrollment to be processed at KU. Note: The Jayhawk Blueprint team will only register students for the current semester because KU registers for classes by semester.

4. Students will be assigned a KU ID number and use it to create their online ID

Once students are accepted to KU as non-degree seeking students, they will receive their 7-digit KU ID number from the KU Admissions Office via standard mail. This ID number is necessary to create their KU online ID, which serves as their official username and password for accessing their online accounts at KU (i.e., Enroll and Pay, email, transcripts, etc.). If students need assistance accessing their KU ID number, they can contact our office. High school counselors should also have this information. Please note that we cannot provide KU ID numbers or online IDs to students via email. Students can set up their KU online ID and password at: https://myidentity.ku.edu/setup/login/setup/login.

If a student has already set up their KU online ID but needs help accessing it, they may contact our office for assistance. For password recovery or changes, students can visit: https://myidentity.ku.edu/services/. For additional assistance with passwords, students may contact KU IT at (785) 864-8080 or via email at itcsc@ku.edu.

5. Students can log in to Enroll & Pay to access and pay their tuition bill

Enroll & Pay is KU's student information system. Through this system, students can view the class(es) they are enrolled in, access grades for completed courses, add KU delegate access for parents/guardians, and pay their bill online at: https://sa.ku.edu.

Students will receive an email at their KU email address with their bill summary and due date information. Payments are due on the 15th day of the month following enrollment, typically October 15th for fall semester and March 15th for spring semester. Students should check their KU email and preferred email regularly for bill updates and deadlines.

We highly recommend that students forwarding their KU email to an account they check frequently (not their school email address) because important emails regarding their tuition bill and deadlines will be sent to their KU email account. Students can find more information about forwarding their KU email at: https://blueprint.ku.edu/email.

Lastly, we strongly encourage all students to set up delegate access for a parent/guardian, especially if they plan to pay the student’s tuition bill. This allows a student’s parent or guardian to communicate with KU staff and access the bill pay systems. Students can learn more about how to set up delegate access for their parent/guardian here: https://blueprint.ku.edu/designate-a-delegate and on page 12 of this handbook.

Dropping a Class

Any student wishing to drop a Jayhawk Blueprint course at KU must obtain approval from their counselor and instructor first. Once a student receives approval, they will need to complete the Jayhawk Blueprint drop form before the drop/withdraw deadline.

Please communicate the following potential consequences of dropping a Jayhawk Blueprint course to your students:

  • Depending on the drop date, students may receive only a partial or no refund of tuition/fees.
  • Depending on the drop date, students may receive a permanent “W” for “withdrawal” on their transcript.
  • Students requesting to drop a class after the withdraw deadline will be unable to do so and will receive a final grade on their KU/college transcript.

Drop forms can be accessed online at: https://blueprint.ku.edu/drop-form. Please have any student who plans to drop a Jayhawk Blueprint course complete this online form as soon as possible, but no later than the withdraw deadline.

Note: Students who have not paid their Jayhawk Blueprint bill and drop after the 100% refund deadline will still be responsible for all or part of the course cost, depending on the drop date.

Textbooks

The University of Kansas provides all required textbooks and classroom materials to Jayhawk Blueprint students at no cost. These textbooks and course materials are comparable to those used in the same course offered at the University. Whenever possible, preferences will be given to open educational resources. At the end of each semester, instructors will work together with their University faculty liaison to identify textbook needs for the following semester and share these requests with the Jayhawk Blueprint program coordinator. The coordinator will then order the necessary resources from the KU Bookstore to ensure that all students have the materials they need for their courses.

Tuition

Jayhawk Blueprint students benefit from a discounted tuition rate set at one-third of KU’s current undergraduate tuition. Currently, the tuition rate for Jayhawk Blueprint students is $103 per credit hour plus any additional fees from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. To determine the cost of a Jayhawk Blueprint course, multiply the number of credit hours of a course by $103. Please be aware that the Jayhawk Blueprint tuition rate is scheduled to increase for the 2025-2026 school year.

Tuition Waivers

Thanks to a grant from Truity Credit Union, USD 497 students who qualify for free or reduced meals are eligible to receive a full or partial tuition waiver for their Jayhawk Blueprint course(s). For questions about tuition waivers, students are encouraged to contact Pam Fraley at pfraley@usd497.org or their high school counselor.

Bill Payment Process

After a student is officially enrolled in a Jayhawk Blueprint course by KU staff, tuition will be applied to their financial statement in Enroll & Pay. Payments are due on the 15th day of the month following enrollment, typically October 15th for fall semester and March 15th for spring semester. Notifications regarding tuition and due dates will be sent via email to students and their parents/guardians after enrollment is processed.

Students have several options for paying their tuition bill: online through Enroll & Pay, in person via the dropbox at Carruth-O’Leary, or by standard mail. Detailed information on payment methods is available online at: https://blueprint.ku.edu/pay-your-bill. Failure to pay by the due date will result in non-refundable late fees and enrollment holds on the student’s account. Full payment is required before enrolling in future Jayhawk Blueprint courses or any other courses at KU.

Note: Tuition for year-long Jayhawk Blueprint courses will be applied to students' financial statements in the fall only.

Late Fees

KU will apply a non-refundable $100 late payment fee for the first and second month of the fall and spring terms for any unpaid tuition and fee balances and, thereafter, a 1.5% monthly assessment if a bill still is not paid. Bills must be paid on-time, or late fees will be applied.

Unpaid Bills

Until a bill is paid, the following may occur:

  • Students will not be able to enroll in future Jayhawk Blueprint courses or any other courses at KU.
  • Non-refundable late fees will continue to be applied to the student's account.
  • The bill may be sent to a collection agency, which could impact the student's credit.

Grades

Students in Jayhawk Blueprint courses are evaluated using the same methods as those in on-campus sections at KU, including papers, portfolios, quizzes, and labs, and are held to the same grading standards. The University of Kansas uses a letter grading system for these courses, with the following grades available: A/-, B+/-, C+/-, D+/-, and F. Additionally, a grade of W may be assigned for withdrawal from a course.

IMPORTANT: Grades earned in a Jayhawk Blueprint course will become part of a student's permanent academic record and will affect their college GPA. Therefore, it is crucial to emphasize to students the importance of performing well in these courses.

Jayhawk Blueprint instructors must submit a final grade roster to their University faculty liaison no later than one week after the last day of class each semester (or academic year for year-long courses). The University faculty liaison will then record final grades in Enroll & Pay at KU within one week of receiving them from the instructor.

Once grades are posted in Enroll & Pay, students can access their final grade for their Jayhawk Blueprint course(s). Instructions on how to check grades online are available at: https://blueprint.ku.edu/check-grades.

Transcripts

KU transcripts are not automatically sent to a student’s college/university. To have a transcript sent to an institution other than KU, students must order a transcript from the KU Registrar’s Office. There is a small fee for this service. Students may order an official transcript by visiting: https://registrar.ku.edu/order-transcript. Please have students contact our office if they need assistance.

Academic Accommodations

The School District and the University of Kansas will work together to provide reasonable academic accommodations for students completing Jayhawk Blueprint courses.

Tutoring at KU

The KU Center for Learning and Writing Support offers free, course-specific tutoring services to students enrolled in Jayhawk Blueprint courses. Tutoring is available through one-on-one appointments either in person at Anschutz Library or virtually via Zoom. Students can schedule a meeting with a tutor to help them understand course concepts and problems covered in their Jayhawk Blueprint course(s). Course availability may vary by semester, but typically includes MATH 101 and BIOL 100/102. Students may visit their website for more information and to schedule an appointment: https://learningandwriting.ku.edu/individual-tutoring.

Please note, students will need their KU Online ID and password to schedule an appointment. If students need help accessing this information, they may contact the Jayhawk Blueprint office at blueprint@ku.edu or 785-864-0934.

Writing Support at KU

The KU Writing Center provides free writing support to all students enrolled in a Jayhawk Blueprint course. Peer writing consultants can assist students with writing assignments for any class at any stage of the process from brainstorming to revision. This service is particularly beneficial for students taking ENGL 101/102 or COMS 130, in addition to other Jayhawk Blueprint courses that involve writing.

They offer three different types of writing consultation appointments to meet students at their point of need:

  • Face-to-Face Consultations allow students to meet with a peer writing consultant in-person at their Anschutz Library location. These appointments work well for all stages of the writing process.
  • Videoconference Appointments allow students to meet in real-time with a consultant online, using video, voice and text chat. These appointments work well for all stages of the writing process.
  • eTutoring appointments allow students to upload a draft of their essay and get written feedback via email. These appointments are best for later in the writing process when students have a written draft; this option doesn’t work well for brainstorming or when students need to ask the consultant a lot of questions.

For more information about their writing consultations options and how to use their online appointment system, visit How Consultations Work.

Please note, you students need their  KU Online ID and password to schedule an appointment. If students need help accessing this information, they may contact the Jayhawk Blueprint office at blueprint@ku.edu or 785-864-0934.

Orientation, Training, and Professional Development

As a new Jayhawk Blueprint instructor, your University faculty liaison will provide training and orientation (not to exceed 3 days) to help familiarize you with the course. During the onboarding process, you will receive essential resources, such as the current course syllabus, assessment rubrics, course textbook, sample exams, and other necessary materials to ensure a consistent classroom experience. Additionally, your faculty liaison will review assignment and grading standards, course integrity, pedagogical approaches, relevant policies and procedures, and other topics specific to the course content. Your faculty liaison will also provide timely curriculum and departmental updates, as well as ongoing training and professional development as needed.

Course Syllabi

Before the start of each course, faculty liaisons will review the syllabus and provide feedback on its structure, format, and content to ensure it meets departmental and University policies. The course syllabus should mirror an on-campus syllabus in both format and content.

Classroom Visits and Instructor Observations

Instructors teaching Jayhawk Blueprint courses will be observed in their classrooms by their faculty liaison at least once during the academic year. The primary goal of these visits is to evaluate course rigor and ensure adherence to department and University curriculum and assessment guidelines. Additionally, these visits provide an opportunity to offer instructors constructive feedback to enhance the classroom experience for Jayhawk Blueprint students.

Your faculty liaison will contact you to schedule a classroom observation, preferably before finals week. During this visit, the faculty liaison will complete an instructor observation form and share their feedback with you afterward.

The faculty liaison will also obtain final approval from the appropriate academic dean and/or department chair.

Orientation, Training, and Professional Development

As a faculty liaison, your role involves training new Jayhawk Blueprint instructors and familiarizing them with the course. This includes assisting them with curriculum implementation, pedagogy, assessments, and communicating departmental expectations. The training should mirror the one provided to GTAs in your department and should not exceed 3 days.

During the onboarding process, you are responsible for providing essential resources to instructors, such as the current course syllabus, assessment rubrics, course textbook, sample exams, and other necessary materials to ensure a consistent classroom experience. Additionally, you will review assignment and grading standards, course integrity, pedagogical approaches, relevant policies and procedures, and other topics specific to the course content. Please provide a copy of your training materials, including the syllabus and assessment rubrics, to the Jayhawk Blueprint program coordinator annually.

Lastly, all faculty liaisons are expected to provide timely curriculum and departmental updates, as well as ongoing training and professional development for all Jayhawk Blueprint instructors as needed.

Course Syllabi

Before the start of each course, faculty liaisons must review the course syllabus and provide feedback on its structure, format, and content for each Jayhawk Blueprint instructor they support, ensuring the syllabus meets departmental and University policies. The course syllabus should mirror an on-campus syllabus in both format and content.

Academic Accommodations

The school district and the University of Kansas will work together to provide reasonable academic accommodations for Jayhawk Blueprint students.

Some academic accommodation requests may require additional information from the student to determine if the accommodation is reasonable. These requests include, but are not limited to: using notes on exams, having a reduced number of choices on multiple-choice exams, submitting a reduced number of written pages for out-of-class assignments, receiving extended time on out-of-class assignments, and being exempt from giving a speech in front of the class

Students interested in using these accommodations must fill out an online application with the KU Student Access Center (SAC) and upload a copy of their IEP or 504 Plan, along with any other supporting documentation.

As the faculty liaison and instructor of record, you will receive notifications from the SAC regarding academic accommodations that have been approved for students in Jayhawk Blueprint courses. It is important to promptly forward this information to the instructor to ensure they are aware of the academic accommodations their student is eligible to receive. For questions regarding academic accommodations, please contact Arika Sprecker at the KU Student Access Center (arikas@ku.edu).

Textbooks

The University of Kansas provides all required textbooks and classroom materials to Jayhawk Blueprint students at no cost. These textbooks and course materials shall be comparable to those used in the same course offered at the University. Whenever possible, preferences will be given to open educational resources. At the end of each semester, University faculty liaisons will work together with the Jayhawk Blueprint instructors to identify textbook needs for the following semester and share these requests with the Jayhawk Blueprint program coordinator. The coordinator will then order the necessary resources from the KU Bookstore.

Jayhawk Blueprint instructors must submit a final grade roster to their University faculty liaison no later than one week after the last day of class each semester (or academic year for year-long courses). The University faculty liaison will then record final grades in Enroll & Pay at KU within one week of receiving them. Note: the Jayhawk Blueprint instructors follow the district calendar, so the last day of classes at the high schools may be slightly later than at KU.

Classroom Visits and Instructor Observation Forms

As a faculty liaison, one of your responsibilities is to conduct classroom visits and observe the Jayhawk Blueprint instructors at least once during the academic year. The primary goal of these visits is to evaluate course rigor and ensure adherence to department and University curriculum and assessment guidelines. Additionally, these visits provide an opportunity to offer instructors constructive feedback to enhance the classroom experience for Jayhawk Blueprint students.

You will need to contact the Jayhawk Blueprint instructors to schedule a classroom observation, preferably before finals week. During this visit, you are required to complete the online instructor observation form and share your feedback with the instructor. If you identify any areas of concerns during your site visit, please follow up with the Jayhawk Blueprint program coordinator immediately to address these issues.

Observation forms must be submitted before the last day of the spring semester at KU.
